I painted “Cider Apples” at Merridale Cider orchards on Vancouver Island.
The orchard is about an hours drive north of Victoria and the people who run the operation work hard to produce an amazing cider. They also do weddings and so we chose Merridale Cider for our daughter, Amy and her husband Tyler’s wedding. It was great to have the family share in the great food and love.
This painting is a small piece, 11″X14″ and I am drawn to the idea that orchards are about cycles and seeds. The trees drop their fruit which fertilizes the ground and leaves seeds to replace the dying generation.
When I was younger I always thought it would be great if we could invent a way to stay young. Perhaps we could replace a heart, or grow a new limb when we needed it. Then it occured to me that perhaps we would just need to preserve the brain in a jar:)
I read about all sorts of ingenious ways to prolong life…freezing ourselves until a cure for this or that could be found.
Then ……..my first child (Amy) was born. And I realized that nature “already” has a way to preserve ourselves.
There is an old expression that says………”The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”.
And we all know that idea well when we look around us…… recognizing many features in family faces through the generations.
That is what the painting “Cider Apples” is all about.
I also love the “loud” thumping sound an apple makes when it drops from a tree as you quietly sit painting the scene.
As I have said before…..I don’t do “en Plen Air” painting…..but……… I love painting on location in an orchard or anywhere else outdoors:)
