Public art call Sept 1st 2009

Support is growing from artists across Canada to stand up and be heard on Sept 1st 2009 by creating their own public works of art in the streets and parks of Canada. I am organizing this event so that people can have a voice outside of the normal structures of our art institutions which is now heavily controlled…. much the same as the art society of earlier days when the impressionists could not have their work shown because they were doing something outside of the norm. The art structure today does not reward artists who work independently for example. You can watch the documentary film, “From Baghdad to Peace Country” by the National film board of Canada, to see an example of my work for peace which was done independently.http://coastnet.com/dhouston/

I want this public art project to be done in a positive way. With no anger. I want it to be something joyful. We are not trying to slam Canada Council but we do want change in the structure. I want Canada Council to stop asking artist to explain why their art proposal will help their career. This has nothing to do with the art or why we do art.
