It was such a beautiful day out today and Elizabeth and I found Michel Richer, a wood carver, on the beach of Victoria, doing what he does best….carving the driftwood washed up on the beach at the foot of Cook street. This area was one of Emily Carr’s favorite beaches.
Michel lives on Mayne island and is also a part of Victoria’s landscape. His e mail is michelricher@shaw.ca
He works quietly and professionally on the beach and makes contact with people. He is not allowed to put prices on his work but it is also nice to hear that the authorities leave him alone for the most part.
He spent many years building and fixing wood boats and now concentrates more on carving. He wears a back brace which helps him after an accident left him with back isues.
Anyway…it was a pleasure meeting him working away in the sun on the beach and recycling what washes up on the beach naturally.
