The New York Times (and other world media) once again are reporting the story wrong…..they would like you to believe that “Obama” or America made the choice to withdraw troops from Iraq. This just isn’t true and it is sad that such a large, trusted news organization would falsely report international news. I followed the battles of the Bush administration, who fought hard to insist that American forces be allowed to stay in Iraq for years. They didn’t want to simply withdraw and loose influence in Iraq after pouring in hundreds of billions of dollars into the war in order to win control of Iraq.(An example of this influence: One of the first tasks of the American administration, besides stationing troops around the oil ministry and oil wells, was to write the new Iraqi constitution in such a way that it favoured American oil companies in the development of any “new” oil fields.)
It is very clear that it was “Iraq” that set the agenda for US troops.(See an article by James Hider in Baghdad, July 8th, 2008. : “Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki demands US withdrawal timetable”)
Anyone following this story will remember many such articles back then. It was one of the reasons behind the heavy bomb attacks in the streets of Baghdad ….. the different factions vying for power were pressuring the Iraqi government not to make deals with the American’s. Nouri Al Maliki knew that well and was very firm with the Bush administration on that issue. The timetable for America to leave was decided just before Obama took office. So why is the New York Times and others now making it look like Obama made the grand decision to get out.
The Americans were firmly given their marching orders shortly before Obama took office. It is clear in many articles back at that time.
The power of the people is here now.
There is hope.
