Double standards in treatment of Libya

Many people like myself are questioning why the west is supporting Libya and yet turning a blind eye to Syria, Yemen, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. The following article at the end of this blog posting on CNN raises those same questions.
I am disappointed to discover that the NDP party in Canada as well as the Green Party of Canada do not seem to grasp how dangerous it is to get bogged down in a civil war. We have no idea who the rebels are or what they represent and yet we are clearing a path for them by bombing tanks and people… even when they are retreating or sitting in their barracks.
Every aspect of this turkey shoot goes against all the teachings of Gandhi which I would have thought these two parties would adhere to.
I believe that the double standard problem will reap serious repercussions for long drawn out conflicts and bring complete misery and deaths to tens of thousands of people.
The Iraq conflict is a good example of what I mean. The problems in Iraq are far from over and it is based on the fact that the United States wrote their constitution for them after the last invasion. They treated the Kurds in the north differently during the sanction years and the tangled mess created there is coming home to haunt them. This will spread down through the rest of Iraq for years to come. America insists on pushing it’s weight around…as it is doing in now Libya…making contact and deals with rebel groups…..willing to hand over thirty billion dollars to a group it still does not even recognize or fully understand yet and with no real plan for the long term or how anyone will ever fund the reconstruction of Libya.
