World Congress on Family Law and children’s Rights \u00a0are holding the Fifth World Congress, “Children caught in Conflict”…23-26 August 2009, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.<\/div>\n
One of the points that caught my eye was that they are\u00a0\u00a0“proudly not \u00a0just a “talk fest”.<\/div>\n
And I believe in that idea myself completely. The organization has been presented with awards from the UN and attended by major world leaders.<\/div>\n
With that in mind \u00a0I have to say that I am troubled at the inconsistency of \u00a0the UN \u00a0when it supports the world congress on family law and children’s rights when at the same time it was supporting it’s resolutions for\u00a0sanctions on Iraq. (In 2002, a UNICEF study clearly stated that several hundred thousand children had died in Iraq as a “direct” result of UN sanctions.)<\/span><\/div>\n
I believe that the world congress means what it says about priding itself on not just being a “talk fest”.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
But I also believe that someone has to have the courage to raise that point at their upcoming conference, \u00a0“Children caught in conflict”. \u00a0 Not so much so \u00a0that one can point fingers of \u00a0blame but simply to illustrate how easy it is to say one thing and do another when it suits us. If international law or children’s rights are \u00a0broken then we must have a system in place to hold those accountable… no matter who \u00a0is at fault, even if it is a respected country in all other ways.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
If we don’t have that then there is little point in holding such conferences if all we are going to do is pat each other on the back, hand out awards and say we care about children.<\/span><\/div>\n
I believe that when these judges from around the world meet, they will think carefully about these kind of issues. I wish them success.<\/span><\/div>\n
I have been asked by the organizers to have some of my artwork at the conference and I am happy to do that because I believe that they truly are proud not to be just a “Talkfest”.<\/span><\/div>\n
