“Springtime Renewal” is about the potential that rests underground in the cool earth……waiting for the warm sunlight to help it burst out above ground. It is one of my favourite places near Victoria, B.C. to explore and paint. I also love to paint on large canvases and enjoy the bounce of the surface as I work the brush over the surface. I don’t stand back and look at the work which is the normal convention for working large. I see the shapes and textures in a very abstract sort of way first. I constantly screw up my eyes to look at the painting, the shapes, the values, the composition, the lights and darks.
\nThe image or landscape is secondary to me. Certainly the location itself is not important to me in a real sense. Although as I said….I love that part of the world and sitting painting there. I don’t use an easel when I work outdoors any more. I just lay it flat or prop it up against a tree or rock. In general I like the sloppy approach and distorted way it unfolds. The more rigid one sets up…the more rigid becomes the painting…..at least it works that way for me. Everyone uses their own approach to creating their work.
\nI try to create a feeling of movement. A sense of fresh growth and fertility. I hope that you will agree with me that this painting does just that:)<\/p>\n
