Nanaimo Sculpture

It was wonderful to drive up to Nanaimo yesterday and see our new sculpture in place.
My son Samuel and I created this sculpture together. He did a super job welding.
There was a good turnout from the media and so the event should stir some interest in the community. The works will be auctioned off over the coming year. People can place a bid on the works and the money will go towards the support of the Nanaimo Art Gallery. (The city of Nanaimo bought the works from the artists).
We worked on our sculpture for about three months. Doing a couple of hours a day on average. We had a basic plan but allowed the materials to form it’s own shape. For example, when we were welding the long thin points, there was a tendancy for the metal to bend outwards. We could have tacked it further with tack welds and clamped it tighter but we found the natural bending outwards added an interesting twist to the structure and so we quickly encouraged the idea and let it do it’s own thing.
The shapes are made from Stainless steel and should stand up to the seaside elements fairly well.
There are about ten or so other artists and once I have the information and map of the locations I will post a link to that. In the meantime anyone interested in submitting works for next year should contact the Nanaimo web site or the Nanaimo Art Gallery.
As artists, we think this sculpture event is a great idea and I would like to see the city of Victoria do something similar. I have heard that they are working on a plan to do something so I encourage them to do that. The event brings people together and is good for the community in so many ways.
