City Celebrates Public Art Week
My son Samuel and I will be in attendance for the Nanaimo sculpture event on Tuesday at 10:00am at Maffeo Sutton Park.
May 6- May 9-16, 2011 has been declared „Public Art Week‟ in Nanaimo. Over the course of the week residents are encouraged to explore and celebrate the collection of public art that can be found throughout our city.
On Tuesday May 10th city crews will be installing six public art pieces at Maffeo Sutton Park, one at McGregor Park, and an eighth at the recently renovated Beban Park Social Centre. This collection of temporary art will be on display until May 2012 and all of the pieces will be on on- line auction at the Nanaimo Art Gallery website. The auction proceeds will benefit the Nanaimo Art Gallery and the temporary art project fund to ensure the project is sustainable.
On Thursday, May 12th the Nanaimo Art Gallery will be hosting an Art in the Parks opening event to celebrate the installation of the art temporary public art pieces. Residents are invited to visit Maffeo Sutton Park to view the pieces, meet some of the artists and learn about public art and its role in our community. The event will begin at 4:30pm, with speeches beginning at 5:00 PM.
In addition to these eight temporary art pieces, there are many other public art installations and events happening this month. Colourful banners will be installed along arterial streets and throughout downtown, and a new mural commissioned by the Nanaimo Airport as part of their ongoing terminal upgrades will be unveiled. Gallery Row, on Fitzwilliam Street in the Old City Quarter, will also be showcasing new art pieces at an unveiling and dedication of two pieces bought at last year‟s public art auction on Saturday, May 14th at noon.
