Afghanistan is now Obama’s War.
Wow. So many of us expected much more from this man who has a gift for speeches and words.
He is about to be bogged down in a quagmire of war. Churchill always said that war is a series of blunders. Why should we expect this one to be any different? The thing that Obama will stress is the exit strategy. That will get him support ……at least for a while…. until it slowly dawns on people that they can’t possibly win against this kind of war. They are not fighting against a country with leaders. The insurgents, freedom fighters, al-Qaeda , Taliban etc., are as ephemeral as smoke…. and a military option is the very last thing that should be considered for finding a solution in this part of the world. The military people always see war as the solution. There will be lots of “talk” about also pumping in a good measure of creating political solutions as well….but the truth is that if we practiced honest political solutions in the first place we wouldn’t have wars.
Eight years from now this discussion will still be going on and our leaders will be promising yet another great strategy and selling us the idea that “this time…we will get it right”. Meanwhile, mothers and fathers will be waiting in the rain on the tarmac as their young sons and daughters shattered and dismembered bodies are unloaded from the military plane.
The people who are responsible for these blunders… are us.
The people. We vote these leaders into office.
Obama clearly said in his book “Audacity of Hope” that he believed in going to war to secure America’s “interests” overseas. So why do we expect him to do anything different.
Get your cheque book open because this is going to cost us hundreds and hundreds of billions of dollars.
The military knows we are all mugs and we will cough up no matter what they ask for.
Millions of young voters are about to lose hope and feel that everything that has been said about governments is true…. that it is not worth getting involved… that your vote doesn’t count anyway. That you can’t change the world.
