Time article: America loses out on some oil contracts in Iraq….BUT…….

Time magazine’s writer,Vivienne Walt, misses an important issue when writing her article and stating that people appear to be proved wrong about the belief that the American invasion of Iraq was simply a way to get control of Iraq’s oil.
The first point that must be made is that when America took control of Iraq and installed the puppet government, America went to great lengths to write Iraq’s constitution. One of the things that was written into the Iraqi constitution was that any country would be allowed to bid on “existing” oil wells. But….and this is the important point that Vivienne Walt overlooks, they also wrote the constitution in such a way that any “NEW” oil wells must be given to the country with the highest technology available today…and so everyone knows that America has the most sophisticated oil extraction technology in the world and they will get those “Huge” and likely the most valuable contracts. There are vast oil fields in Iraq that offer spectacular potential and America will get all those contracts….. simply because of the embedded wording in the Iraqi constitution…. which was written by the US for the Iraqi people. The insurgents fought because of this type of injustice.
The other point that Ms Walt misses completely is that the Americans “lost” the Iraq war for the most part. They tried in vain for years to be allowed to stay in the country and keep a major presence in the region. They lost that argument because the insurgents put up such a huge resistance that pressured the current Iraqi government not to give in to American influence more than they had to. The Americans were told to get out by 2011. (This time frame was not decided by Bush or Obama even though the media repeatedly will say that the American’s have “decided” to get out by 2011. The record clearly show that America worked hard to be allowed to stay and it became clear that they were shown the door.
America didn’t get everything that it went after. Not completely. This doesn’t mean that their “intentions” were noble and that they didn’t have plans to get control of the oil fields.
They just won the battle and lost the war.
