Join in sculpture photography session with Deryk and Samuel

My son Samuel and I will be setting up our sculpture at the foot of government street near the beach in Victoria, BC. on December 27th at 9:30 am till around 11:30am.
We will be taking photos of the sculpture in this natural setting which will be used in our submission to Nanaimo. (The Nanaimo comittee can then see what it looks like in a real setting).
Anyone who is interested in seeing what we have created is welcome to join us and take photographs. Our sculpture will be tucked up against the trees and bushes and also moved around to various spaces in that area. (Near the little duck pond…. take the path leading through the trees to the water side).
We see the piece as new growth or shoots reaching into the sky. It is a positive view. The beauty of life.
Samuel and I have been working on this sculpture project in our new studio. It has been a fair bit of work leveling the ground for the new shed and then wiring it up for the right voltage to run a TIG welding machine. We then ordered the stainless steel material needed to make our plans a reality. We have limited space and we want to be respectful of our neighbors with noise…so we have all the material cut to our dimentions by a local shop.
We are responding to the Nanaimo call for submissions for temporary sculptures. The city and the art gallery of Nanaimo pay the artist to install the work for one year and then the city auctions off the sculptures at the end of the year. The artist gets paid up front. It is not a lot of money but it is a wonderful way to showcase ones work and try out ideas that could then be expanded to larger scale projects in the future.
I have approached the city of Victoria to see if they would do a similar idea as Nanaimo and I am told that they are trying to organize a sculpture event where they will invite six or so artists to submit ideas for large scale projects. These would be set out around Victoria and the hope is that one of these pieces would then be kept as a permanent legacy for Victoria. I think this is a great idea and I hope it will be able to happen. So good luck to the Victoria Art Gallery and the city of Victoria on that creative idea.
